Maureen said Uf was doing fine and offered to come in and let me see him. I didn't need asking twice!
Maureen took him in and he was rather excited but was really good. It was wonderful to see him and get a play, especially with his lovely soft ears. It was hard to see him go especially as he looked out of the car all the way down the road.

I decided I would visit puppy class today and see everybody and of course Uffa. It was strange just watching but it was also very funny as Uffa kept looking across and if he caught my eye the tail would have a wee wag. Why it is easier to leave him now I don't know but I know he is settling well with Maureen. I have now started to tidy away my 'dog' stuff but only to the attic as who knows when we will be back and I can take up this wonderful task with a new puppy again.

Big Brave Uffa

Uffa has improved daily until yesterday when he was 'over improved'. Basically Uffa had a bit much bounce and a couple of times just went mental round the house.
Today was stitches out and Uffa just stood while they nipped them out. No more lampshade and tomorrow a short free run.

Tomorrow we pick Eric up at the airport which will be fun as we haven't seen him since February.I am pretty sure Uffa will not be a good guide dog and might well jump a little bit! Sunday is my really bad day, with Uffa going in the morning to live with Maureen. I think I will just leave Eric to do the deed. I just wish I could explain to him what is happening and why.

We leave for Singapore on Monday so at least I will be busy on Sunday afternoon as so far I have prepared nothing. If it was just a holiday I would have done more, never mind it will all work out-I hope.

Thank you to all who have read about Uffa's first months. I have thoroughly enjoyed having him and will miss him terribly. There is nothing like an Uffa cuddle. He has been a really patient patient and other than permanently having his toys all over the floor he has been no problem. He only wears his lampshade at night which means constant vigilance during the day but I think it is worth it. He rarely heads for the stitches which is a bonus.
He has his "ice lolly' which takes a while to eat each day(bone filled with dog food and frozen) and is playing with toys he hasn't looked at for a while. The toy box itself is turning out to be great fun.

Still roll on Friday.

Pictures today are Uf with his lolly and Uf with his snazzy new headgear.

Uffa Update

Uffa is doing fine now and we are managing to remove the 'lampshade' for a good part of the day. He has been quite quiet all day just wanting petted and not his usual self, which was good for his recovery. Since tea he has brightened up and wants to play. When I say woods I think I should say 'ditches'. Saturday was a cleaner walk with a finishing clean stream. Sunday, well, Uffa found not only a muddy ditch but a stinky muddy ditch which turned his lower half orange right at the end of his walk! A decision was made to just take him home and stick him in the shower rather than rub forever. Uffa loved his shower (undercarriage only) especially getting his legs shampooed and rinsed. He watched the foul coloured water disappear as he became all clean and sweet smelling again. Uffa was then taken out and given a good dry, sadly not before he had a good shake in the middle of the bathroom. How far can a dog shake water? Further than you think! Next problem-see the colour of my jumper-bad choice. I should have known better and taken it off but hey I never learn. Training at the moment is on a bit of a plateau, some days Uffa is the perfect guide dog and then..... I am convinced he knows what he should do but sometimes he just can't really be bothered. He loves his free runs but I am still struggling to recall if he is playing with another dog. I have started putting on his lead if I have to get him and I think it may be working.
I have tried many times lately to get a new picture but Uffa has become camera shy. He either won't stay put and comes towards me or just goes the wrong way. You don't really want his rear end disappearing in the distance-do you? I will keep trying.

Two Steps Forward One Step Back

Uffa this week has taken to jumping up on me especially on our first outing to the toilet in the morning. When I say Off it starts a jumping puppy turn which at over 36kg is rather dangerous. When he calms down he just trots to the toilet as normal.
Today was our last puppy class together but I didn't know as I learned at the end the next one is cancelled. We were out for a walk today which included a trip to the local Tesco metro. You can hardly believe that 10 dogs (between 6 months and a year) could go out together and behave but they did-well almost. Uffa did quite well although he pulled too much towards the others when we were stopped. He just loves ALL the other dogs. He came home absolutely shattered and slept for over 2 hours. He is now chomping on a nylabone.

Yesterday I took him into the city centre on the bus for pigeon and shop training. We only found two pigeons and Uffa has the usual male characteristics when shopping-when I stopped to look at anything he just lay down uninterested. I'll never know if I should get the stone or navy trousers!

I went and tried on walking shoes and he was so good until I was leaving when he decided he didn't want to shop anymore and wouldn't get up. What would I do without 'biscuits'.On the whole it was a good outing which showed good progress.

Uffa is home

Uffa is home again. I got him back on Monday at 1pm. I am glad to report both Uffa and I managed to cope with our weekend apart. He was pleased to see me but had obviously bonded with Maureen which makes me feel happier about what I am about to do to him.
After we got home we went out for a bounce in the fields and he fell fast asleep soon as we returned. He got pushed across the floor out of the way when I made the tea and had to be woken to get his! He played for a short while and then out for the count again. Maureen must have had a very active boy.

Today we had a lovely walk in some nearby woods and since Hilary and I wanted our coffee out this week(Uf got too dirty to be taken anywhere last week)he got his lead on in the muddy parts.

This worked really well but just before we got to the car he jumped into the burn and suddenly realised water was fun so got soaked-too wet and stinky for any establishment! Oh Uffa!!

PS Uffa is lovely and clean and so fluffy after a dip in the lovely soft water. Auntie Anne asked along to one of her son Stuart's games which was played alongside some others. Uffa was quite excited with all the activity and was rather too eager to join in when we arrived. As time went on he got calmer but it was too much to ignore when the ball rolled up to his nose. It might be worth another visit.
Sunday was a short trip to Crathes castle for a lovely walk. Although it is only 20 mins in the car we ended up with snow and ice again which was a bit of a surprise. Uffa had a few rows especially when he pinched a boys stick from his hand! He is so much bolder than even a couple of weeks ago. We (Auntie Hil) did extra recall until we wondered if he ran on just to be recalled for a fine piece! We finished with a good rub down and some coffee shop training which he is rather good at.

Beach Bash

Today we had a lovely walk along the beach. He will pee no problem but just doesn't want to poo. He ended up in the border after spending half an hour in his area doing nothing!
Other than that little hiccup he is progressing well. We went to Asda the other day and I took a trolley and walked around, asked him to sit and down, hid round a shelf unit and he coped really well. It is a very expensive training exercise as who can walk round Asda without buying anything despite needing nothing on arrival!!

We were at a hockey game yesterday and although the game didn't interest him too much the children playing at the side with sticks and balls proved very tempting. It took a good few tugs to stop him. Who needs to pay for a gym?

He has started a new game with us in the garden. Get a toy and putt us with it and then run away. Down for Uffa just after 7, give him a cuddle and then take him out to busy followed closely by second trip to big busy. Then he gets breakfast. This is the only time in the day that Uffa beats me back inside!
Today 7 came and went, 7.30 came and went. I ate my breakfast then 8 came and went. I decided to shower and dress so 8.30 also passed into history and still no POO. By 9 and after many trips to his toilet I gave in and gave him his breakfast hoping this would get him going but no. By now I was just beginning to get slightly concerned.

It was a beautiful morning so by 10.45 I decided we would head to the woods. Tried for a last time to empty Uffa but only got a pee before heading off. He got out of the car and within 50m he was squatting. Is his toilet no longer good enough? Is the vegetation not green enough? Or am I just being had???

PS Karolina can't get email to you so here is my email- elovie@btinternet.com

Stinky

Please don't rub anymore!

Uffa has had a lovely weekend which started off with a free run on the beach. Everything was lovely(even the weather) until Uf decided to roll. I did the 50m dash and was almost sick with the smell of a very stinky, fleshy jaw bone, probably from a dolphin or similar. We then stayed a few paces away from wee Uf,

A good rub down with a soapy cloth did help but the rest of the day he got gently patted on the head and no big cuddles.

Sunday, due to necessity, we went to Tesco. Uffa was really good until the last 2 aisles when he lay down and decided enough was enough. We did finish with a little bribery. In the afternoon Eric took him to the woods where he decided not to follow the lurcher round the boggy bit but go straight through. You can see the result after a good towelling!!

At least Uffa doesn't seem to mind that he is both stinky and muddy.

Evil Uffa

Teenage Hormones!!

Uffa, until now, has been the nicest, most obedient and loving dog any puppy walker could ever wish for. What has changed I hear you ask? Well I think his teenage hormones are acting up and having 2 sons and a previous male puppy I hope they settle down again soon. He is still a lovely cuddly dog but 'sit' and 'down' are only quickly achieved if a biscuit is on offer. 'Come' is now achieved after 'I have had a bit more play, sniff or dig'. As for the poor female of the species Uffa has to be watched as he is now being tempted a bit more by their rears!
To be honest he is still pretty good, he has just lulled us into a false sense of security over the last few months.

This morning we have had a lovely free run along the beach so he is now fast asleep so all sins are totally forgiven.

Snow,snow and more snow

                            What a help!

        It's not cold mum!

We are still in snow. Going to bed is no problem as he is always so sleepy at bedtime but I do hear him about 7am just before I normally go down to him. So far he has had a nose at the shoes and removed a trainer only for greeting purposes.(Uffa needs something in his mouth when he gets excited seeing you) The hand towel also appeared on the floor but absolutely no chewing. He even got left for a half hour on Friday while I went to pick up my computer which, with a new hard drive should be fully fixed.

We are back covered in snow which Uffa just loves. He now cries at the door just to go and play. It took courage at first not to take him out but I am toughening up. I have realised that every time he cries I speak to him so I am only encouraging him.

I took Uffa to be weighed at 6 months and he is now over 24kg, and still on the thin side. Another big dog. The not so good news is two of his baby teeth(at the top) have not come out as the big ones have come in so he will need an op. The vet says it can be done with the castration. Sore fore and aft!!!

News on Alec. He is now paired with a lady and starts his last part of training. He is such a softie that getting the confidence has been slow but they say he is now doing really well. He seems to be a dog that everybody falls for-not just me!! I am so proud of him.

Far too long since last blog!

Apologies about the long gap since the last blog. Uffa is doing really well - much better than my computer which at the moment won't switch on!
Uffa has been on holiday with his Auntie Hilary for the last two weeks as Eric and I were away to Singapore looking for a new place to stay.

Yes, Eric has a new job and we are away to live in Singapore which is very exciting but I am pretty upset about having to leave my not so little Uffa. I am not leaving until the end of March so I still have a little time left.

Uffa, I am assured was a good boy on his holidays and behaved well. It was funny coming back as he wasn't sure whether to follow Hil or me. It makes me feel good knowing how settled he felt.

Uffa is now so big his cage is on the small side so in the next couple of days I am going to let him have his "big boy" bed. I hope the shoe rack will be safe as he ignores it during the day now.

I am on a different computer so sorry no new photo, maybe next time.

December

December has been a busy month with me working for a couple of weeks(part time), Xmas shopping to be done, cards to be written menus to be planned. I am glad to say I think I am under control and ready to roll. Of course what some of you don't know is that this is all a bit of a struggle as I am a bit of a bah humbug Xmas sort of person. I enjoy seeing the family but I don't like all the palaver that accompanies it. Don't worry though Uffa's Xmas is sorted!
Uffa has already been to his Xmas party and thoroughly enjoyed it but didn't win any prizes. We all then went through to another room for lunch. We all bring something and have a lovely 2 course buffet lunch. How this all works when most of us have a puppy I will never know -but it does. It must be our wonderful training!!
Uffa has been shopping in the city centre and looking at all the Xmas decorations without a problem. He seems to take most things in his stride now. He still occasionally dislikes going out and if he knows a more direct route home he lets you know by slamming the anchors on. Some drivers must wonder what I am doing hauling a dog up the road but he doesn't get to win.
We now have some snow which Uffa just loves. There are more whimpers at the back door than ever but often just after he has been staring out the patio doors! This dog is no fool.

Missing mum-or not

Last week I had to go to work for a few half days so David was roped in to babysit. It was very strange leaving Uffa at home as it is the part of training I am not too good at. He over, the mornings improved and settled much better at the end of the week. David also walked him which again was good for him not always to be with me.
Uffa is still doing well but I am still struggling with the settee problem and the biting me problem. I think it is becoming less often and it seems to be usually when he is seeking attention-especially before meals.
Uffa is still losing teeth and looks ever so grown up with his new big ones. So far I have only found 1, mainly because I realised very quickly that it had come out and looked around where he was.
It is raining again today but I think a nice bounce in the woods this afternoon sounds good. He walked well this morning round the streets, even stopping at the junctions so I think it would be well deserved.

An Uffa Busy Week

Since our last post Uffa and I have been fairly busy. We visited a mother and toddler group which was great for his training. He behaved well and didn't have any of the little ones in tears. By the end of his visit he really didn't mind the little hands on him at all and mosly just lay and chewew his toy. We then went out for lunch before having a long nap in the afternoon-him not me!

We have been to the library this week which is his furthest street walk so far. His walking is improving as things that were interesting are now becoming run of the mill. He is still far too ready to nip to the side for a smell or to find a noise etc. He is just NOSY.

We were at a fund raiser at our local garden centre in which he was the wee star. If only you could have seen my red hands at the end as I had let him mouth me and not all the children and adults as they passed by. He was just a bit hyper for the first half hour.

Today he has been orienteering for the first time. We were at Bennachie and it was freezing-we even had snow! Eric went out on a course but Uffa and I just did a forest walk. Although it was cold it was nice to be out and Uffa certainly enjoyed it.

Uffa now has lost 3 teeth and gained 4!! and no more leg lifting has been tried!!

Three legs on my Uffa!

Uffa had trips in the car on both Saturday and Sunday so was very happy. He was also out for lunch on both days with us and behaved impeccably. His walking is now coming on really well so we now walk to the shops and get the bus home. Why are the floors of buses so disgustingly filthy?
The big news is Uffa has attempted to lift his leg when 'busying'. He is not very steady but he has now tried it twice. We have a small tree in his toilet area which so far has never been used as Alec left having never even attempted the manoeuvre!
He is still settee jumping so if anybody has any solutions on how to stop this please let me know. So far I have hauled him off (only thought it was fun), Taken him out of the room (started going himself and jumping up on return) and ignoring except feigning interest in something so Uff has to find out what. He now just has a look and heads back. I even tried putting boxes on which he just squeezed between. I knew Alec was easy but it's only now I fully appreciate him.
Despite all this I wouldn't swap Uffa for anything now.

Waiting Patiently

Uffa waiting for dad to come home.

Uffa has now lost his two front teeth and didn't wait for Xmas for his replacements. His behaviour this week has been eratic and I just wonder if his gums are sore. Yesterday morning I got so frustrated with him I started shouting at him. He was just doing everything he shouldn't such as biting me, jumping on the chairs, digging the garden etc and would not respond to 'come' at all in the garden. Even if he learnt nothing, I did. Getting angry and shouting only makes things worse and does no good whatsoever.
Uffa has been to puppy class today and did not behave too well. On the recall exercise he felt the need to visit all the other puppies before reaching me-all 5 times. We called it a day after that.
He is now home fast asleep and I don't think he will be a bother to anyone soon!!
On a positive note Uffa is now walking well and 'steady' is even being used. I took him to some busy roads with large lorries passing close by and he was not bothered at all. He seems to accept new noises and situations much better now. Best of all he still likes a cuddle!

Anyone seen a fairy?

Uffa has lost his first tooth. Uffa was at Shell offices to encourage the sale of some Xmas cards when I noticed a little blood on his teddy and sure enough when I looked he was missing his top front tooth. This possibly explains his boisterous behaviour all morning and that he was rather mouthy with everybody but I suppose his mouth was probably sore.

I also found out where I am in his pecking order. At the weekend we were out in the woods when for the first time he didn't come back when shouted. He had only gone 20 feet away but I couldn't see what he was doing so I went to investigate only to find him eating a great big pile of horse poo. What is it about that stuff that attracts dogs so much?

I was told on Friday that Alec has gone to Hamilton but is not yet matched. I am pleased he has not had to go too far and I suppose I have to admit I have a wee hope I might be able to see him again. That is two of my boys now near Glasgow. Hi Graeme!!

Uffa's busy week

On Monday afternoon Uffa was off to visit Hilary as I felt he was becoming too dependant. I was at a bit of a loss so went into town and as usual couldn't be bothered shopping. Uffa had had a busy afternoon as he slept from the time he got home until his tea and then napped all evening. (Hil did you do the same?)
Tuesday is walk and coffee morning. Uffa was initially walked with his extending lead and then was run free. But being Uffa he took the end of the lead in his mouth and walked himself back to the car! While having our tea and fresh scones Uffa behaved absolutely perfectly. He couldn't do better if he was a working dog.
Wednesday meant a trip to the airport to look cute as Xmas cards were sold. He managed this task with ease. I also got him weighed at the vet on the way there so he is now almost 14kg. No wonder I can hardly lift him now.
Today David(supervisor) came to see how we were doing and to give advice on any problems. We had a trip to Asda so David could see him 'working'. All went well and David seems happy with his progress.
He is to change to his big boy collar and adult lead-Where has my baby gone?
With all his travels I am pleased to say the 'spill kit' has not been needed.
I think a nice wood walk this afternoon is on the cards.

The Weekend

Uffa finding stones / Flying Uff with Hilary

Uffa with Eric / Uffa recalling VERY QUICKLY to Eric

We have just had a lovely weekend with Uffa. It started with an early walk along Aberdeen beach with Hilary as the men went jogging. The sun was out and with no breeze it was lovely. Uffa was off his lead and returned with every call to either Hilary or myself. The only slow recall was when he met a couple of dogs, well he was just having a chat!

In the afternoon Eric and I took him for his coffee outing where he could not have been better in anyway. Most people didn't even know he was under the table.

Today we took him to some new woods in the morning and again we practised recall-that is when he actually goes far enough away. He came back a bit muddy but he seems to dislike mud and go around puddles. This surely won't continue!!

In the afternoon we went to Stonehaven and he was lead walked and he actually pulled for some of it. Uffa, I think, is getting to like being out. Let's hope it also continues.

I hope you enjoy his weekend snaps.

A teenager-Please not yet!

The last two days have been slightly more trying as Uffa has been more hyper. He has been back biting me and snapping the air like a crocodile. As he is still little the nose wrinkles up so it is hard not to laugh at him.
This morning the vase of flowers in the hall got tipped over as he was tasting the lillies! He got a big row and now just goes and lies looking at it obviously still tempted. I do admit to leaving them just so he can be taught to leave objects on tables etc depite being able to reach them.
Today was Puppy Class which went O.K. In the afternoon we had a short free run which I think he enjoyed. He picked up a little stick to carry round which made me smile as Alec always carried enormous logs.
He is asleep just now so again all sins are forgiven!!

The Coat

I decided it was about time Uffa started to wear his coat if 'working'. For the last few days I have been putting his coat on and playing with him. Each time he wanted to eat it but slowly he became more accepting of it until yesterday I put it on to visit Aberdeen's newly opened shopping mall. Uffa was really well behaved but sadly Frankie and Bennys' would not let him in for us to have a cup of tea. The second choice welcomed us all! We just made it out in time for Uffa to 'busy'. He made it about 6 feet from the door before letting go, for that I am very grateful.

As you can see Uffa's coat is slightly too roomy, so much so he looks like Superdog with a lovely blue cape when he sits down. He doesn't bother at all now and it can be put on and off anytime.

Today was the first trip ,by bus, to the local shops. I wondered how he would feel about the walk inbetween but he was not too bad. He is getting better but still prefers to walk at my heels rather than lead the way. Not quite the right way round!

14 weeks and counting

Uffa had a busy Saturday visiting Grandparents. He was in the back of the car for the 1 hour journey and seemed to be fine. We only saw him when we slowed in towns. He knew his Macduff toilet despite only having visited once before. He was really well behaved and even trotted round a walk.(mostly behind me but at least he didn't sit down) I have now heard that both his mum and grandmother were not keen on walking so it seems to be hereditary.
Sunday morning we decided to do a Tesco shop with Uffa. Again he was really good until 3/4 of the way round when he decided to lie down in the middle of the aisle. Eric decided this was a good time to leave me to finish. Who was fed up?! The rest of the day we just watched the rain and slowly lost the grass under water. We have stayed here 20+ years and have never seen this before. Uffa didn't want to see it ever and delayed toilet trips as long as he could. As we stood outside in the rain calling him he just sat inside plucking up the courage to go.
Yesterday was lovely so we were out walking again. We started on the street and that lead to the wooded area. Again Uffa was having to be coaxed on the street but seemed to enjoy the second part. Again he was allowed off the lead and he even had a 'puppy moment'. It was lovely to see his mad turn so maybe he is getting the hang of this.
Guess what? Rain again today. This is past a joke. Today is Auntie Hilary day which Alec knew meant a lovely walk followed by a coffee shop. Uffa still just thinks it means coffee as it seems to rain every Tuesday. Maybe a short damp walk first today.
Now Uffa is 14 weeks old he has decided he is too old to sit on my knee. He used to sit on my legs facing me and pull the zips on my tops up and down. He now sits beside me with only his front paws and head on my lap, usually with a toy. He is now really too big for me to carry. Puppy days pass all to quickly. Never mind I am still working on keeping him off the settee. The message has not sunk in yet, it is still too much fun!

Oh Boy!

Uffa over the last couple of days has at last been slightly better when walking. I still have done no lead work, even letting him walk with his lesd in his mouth just to give him some confidence. We did go on a bus yesterday and as I expected no problems as you enter through an open door!
Today we did a street walk in the morning and a lovely woody walk in the afternoon. They are still quite short, maybe too short as Uffa didn't want to come in at the end and just sat down in the drive. I am going to sell tickets to the neighbours for this comedy show.
I used the extending lead this afternoon and even let him off for a while as he seldom left my side. I couldn't even practise 'come'. We didn't see anyone so that probably helped.
He has now settled down after his last meal so peace until bedtime.

Our First Wood Walk

                                                                 Uffa 13 weeks

Our wee Uff is now allowed out so will this change his view on walks? NO. We have an open/woody area beside us so off we set. He was coaxed out the front with treats and toy and was pleased when he was allowed on the cut grass area. As we went through to the rough grass he was still enjoying a sniff but you certainly didn't need the extending lead. Once in the lovely wooded path uffa decided enough was enough and sat down with a cry and wouldn't move. I decided to not push him so we turned and went home but not the same way. No problem. How does he know he is returning home when he doesn't know where he is?

Yesterday he was out for his morning coffee with his Aunties and he could not have been better. When I sat down I asked him to go down which he did and stayed until it was time to go. Does this do Eric out of a job as he took Alec's coffee shop training very seriously!

Uffa also helped to sell Xmas cards at Woodhill House over lunchtime. Well he just was there to played with and that he was. He only was upset when Quaid(13 month and going to Forfar tomorrow) wouldn't play with him. Despite Tigger impressions Quaid ignored him except for trying to pinch his toy. Will Uffa really be that large in 10 months?

Today we have been in the garden as at last the rain has stopped and the sun is out. He is no help whatsoever and by the time we came in was as dirty as I have seen him. A good rummel in the towel soon sorted that.

Today Uffa is also getting meals cut from 4 to 3 so I was pleased that there was plenty going on to keep him busy as we passed the old 11.30 time. Lets hope we can pass the 4pm slot as easily.

Another Wet Weekend

Well did Uffa behave at the coffee morning or what? He lay down beside me and even stayed as another dog was walking by. We had a very nice and relaxed time.
After lunch we took Uffa out for a walk round a couple of streets and it seems he is better at going if there is two of us. We just got home as the heavens opened AGAIN. I was told it was time for a new Uffa video but I need some dry weather!
Sunday came and Uffa accepted the extra hour in his bed without a whimper. I had been listening for the hour just in case!
We decided to take him to the beach for an outing in the morning but just along the prom. Sand will be next time. He pottered along enjoying seeing lots of people, dogs, prams and joggers but after a short while he wanted a carry. He just sat like Lord Muck in my arms looking around as I slowly sank southwards at my knees.
And guess what? Yes, the rain came on again.
Woke up this morning (Monday) and lo and behold it is not only dry but a clear sky.Today is Uffa's release date when he can now safely meet other dogs and have a good doggy sniff around.
I have high hopes this might encourage him to leave the drive! Watch this space.

A wet week

Uffa has now had his injection so we just have 1 week to wait until it fully works. He was really good at the vet and didn't even notice when it was done.
As to the rest of the week. Well....
The biting is now under control after I started leaving the room for 10 secs every time he bit my clothes or me. On Tuesday I was out of the room more often than I was in and now it is just the occasional trip. Mostly he just cried until I returned (promising) but I couldn't keep the smile off my face when in an ultra high moment he just jumped on the settee and cuddled down as I left.
Jumping on the furniture is the new problem so I am hoping it will stop when he just gets hauled off each time. It keeps me fit!
The rain that lasted two days (I felt like I was staying with Graeme in Glasgow again) also caused a problem or two as Uffa didn't want to go out to the toilet. Neither did we but it seemed more essential to us than him! He ended up getting carried a few times as he backed away as soon as the door opened!
Today was Puppy Class so I tried to keep all our usual daily routine which would have meant Uffa would be both rested and EMPTY for the start of class at 10.30. Today Uffa decided not to have a post breakfast nap and not to empty as usual. It all went well but he is now shattered and I feel a peaceful afternoon in the offing.
Tomorrow is another fund raising coffee morning so lets hope the routine retuns by then.

Jaws- the shark or Uffa?

Uffa is definitely growing and getting stronger all the time. How do I know? Well he doesn't get carried so much now and he doesn't fit on my knees without hands keeping him on. As to stronger well he has decided I, and my clothes are well worth biting and I am finding it harder and harder to declamp the jaws. I must admit by evening I am getting increasingly frustrated at him as he keeps just going for me, my clothes and my slippers. I have tried continually replacing me with toys, saying NO or moving away but so far no lasting success. The odd thing is it is just me that is suffering. He just plays nicely with the rest of family and friends. Is this like kids when they always kept bad behavior for mum and behaved angelically for everyone else!
We had a really good trip to the supermarket yesterday when he walked round quite nicely, spoke to lots of people and lay down in the coffee shop while we had our coffee and danish.
He still prefers not to leave for a walk from the house and always heads to the car. I wonder if he will still feel this way when he realises that he has woods next door to play in!
He is fast asleep again so all is forgiven.

Weather Report

It is only today when it has rained virtually all day that I realise that the weather has been really good for the last month. Why? Today an umbrella would have been useful for the toilet trips especially when it takes a few minutes for 'big busy' to filter through Uffa's brain and down to his rear end! I am so glad the 'busy' is pretty immediate.

We went with a friend to the Winter Gardens (greenhouses) for a walk and some new experiences out of the rain. Nothing worried him and the large goldfish were boring. I was holding tight just on case! He did manage to snaffle a bit of a leaf a couple of times but otherwise was well behaved.

The rest of the afternoon was slept away but after tea he made up for it. Twenty toilet trips, well it felt like it, a couple of demented turns, and if it was bad he tried it. Yes, he can now leap onto the settee and my slippers are lucky to be still in one piece. Luckily he is now fast asleep again so one look at him an d all his sins are forgiven.
The days until his injection at 12 weeks are now on a countdown!

Uffa Puffa

We have been fairy busy since the last Uffa news. The list of achievements grows daily although we are still having one wee problem.
This week we have been to the train station (hence the title-sorry!) where he got plenty of attention and a trip on to the platform. He showed no fear with either the noise of the train or the edge of the platform. In fact he wanted to go on the train! We sat on the platform and just watched everyone go by and of course there was the entertainment laid on by a couple of pigeons. Even the platform barriers didn't make him think twice. A successful outing.
After that we went visiting before going home. This meant the next objective of the day was easier to achieve, as he was getting very tired. I was leaving him in his cage for an hour over lunch while I went out for mine. Eric was working from home just on case of problems. There were none and he slept the whole time.
Despite growing like a weed he is still not getting much bolder about going for his walk round the block. He loves being out in the garden, the station and various shops but does not like going out the front. He will head to the car rear before wanting to leave the drive. The block is not very long but the going home leg is done rather faster than the leaving one!
On the whole he is doing well. Accidents are rare inside with us now counting success only when he now uses his toilet. He loves his food and yes, my slippers. He is getting much cheekier now and biting is getting much harder. Roll on his adult teeth.
Grandma came to visit today so here is today's picture.

A Special Day

Yesterday was a day I have been eagerly awaiting since Alec left in June. The Visit.

Uffa was being kindly looked after by Hilary for the afternoon, during which he managed to have his first real puppy moment(A 100mph race around the house which you wonder how he never hurts himself) and then be sick. Amazingly he was invited back.

Now please let me tell you about Alec.

We went to Forfar, and our first view of Alec was to walk well behind and see him with his harness on. It was all very impressive until 'oor Alec' had to gutter himself. Some things never change. After his walk we came up to him at the side of the van and with a soft 'Alec' he looked up and realised who was there. There was no doubting he remembered us as he gave us both a fantastic welcome-it is a wonder we both stayed standing as he is even larger than before. We all then went to the park and he got to run around. For those who knew him well you can guess what he went straight for. Yes,the largest stick around. I had forgotten the body swerve you needed with Alec around! We then went back to the Guide Dog Centre for more cuddles before leaving for home. It was a fantastic visit which I would never have missed. I managed not to cry but it wasn't easy. As this was so important to me I thought you might like to see some pictures of the day. I'm sure Uffa won't mind .

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389871158207658994" style="WIDTH: 320px; Well, Uffa didn't get a buttery but he did enjoy all the attention from everybody. If he didn't think he was the best dog ever before he went he does now. He deserved much of the praise as he not only behaved pretty well we didn't need the 'kit'.
After lunch and a nap we next tried him in the boot of the car(estate not 4 door!). We went to get petrol but when passing the vet nipped in to get the growing lad weighed. Another 1kg this week so he is now 7.6kg. You can see why we are trying to get him to run to the toilet now as the carrying days are numbered.
Sunday was his first big outing with us. A 1 hour drive north to visit granparents. He was a model passenger and slept most of the way there and back. It is just like having a baby again timing journeys between feeds and when ready to settle!
He, again was pretty well behaved , just very sniffy.
Picture this-His 'toilet' at mum's is on the gravel at the end of the house. The house overlooks the sea .It was still VERY windy. Poor Uffa stood weeing with lugs flapping and me standing well to the side. I am glad his legs are still pretty short! I am also glad he now 'busies' on command quickly now as the wind was not warm.
Today he has been busy helping with the hoovering. He moves to where the hoover next has to go to make sure I don't miss anywhere! He also has helped in the garden NOT collecting the leaves. And Eric wonders why little gets done.
Just as well I am not too houseproud.

Mount Everest

This week has seen Uffa expand his boundaries daily.

On Wednesday he eventually plucked up the courage to try the stairs. This was mainly because he could see David at the top. It was quite an effort but with me behind he went right up. It was obviously an achievement in his head as well as he was very excited running around. The big problem was every time he looked down he was scared witless. So, yes, you've guessed it he got carried down and as the day went on he got carried down and carried down and carried down....

Good exercise for me.

Thursday and any chance to nip up the stairs(well nip is a bit of an exaggeration) he took it. So it was time to encourage the descent. It took a treat and encouragement but he made it very cautiously. Now he has tried it a couple of times. But technique is lacking with a belly slide often incorporated along with a leap at the bottom of sheer relief!

Going to our first real Guide Dog Puppy Class this morning so lets hope he enjoys it as much as Alec did. Speaking of Alec, we are going to visit him next week before he moves on from Forfar to further training. He will be matched with someone at the end of this month. I am rather exited as I haven't seen him since June and have missed him so much.

Where has wee Uffa gone?

Monday
The day started as usual. Uffa got filled and emptied regularly, helped around the house and garden and in the afternoon we had a visit to the garden centre. Between us all Uffa's toilet is getting well used and the kitchen roll has been moved out of quick reach. We think he is occasionally asking out but it could be wishful thinking.

He loves his food and he is round to his cupboard, staggering through sleep, if he hears the rumble of the box.

Today he had a visit to B&Q and didn't want to leave. He was even stopped by a young man who wanted to take his picture. Uffa's Dating Agency here we come!!

He also had his first visit to Auntie Anne's for a cup of tea and soon fell asleep under the table. The conversation was obviously not stimulating enough.

Tonight a new use was found for the now empty toy box.

End of the First Week

It has been a quick week with Uffa. A little bundle who couldn't run without falling over has changed into a much sturdier wee pup. He still loves his cuddles so I'm happy!
We went to the vet to get him weighed today and found out he has put on 1kg. He got a biscuit from the receptionist so he'll probably be keen to return.
Today's big news is while playing in the garden he stopped, went to the toilet area and 'busied ' all on his own. Of course later he just went on the grass.
Evenings seem to be his most active with him having some 'puppy moments'. Stand back and light the fuse.
One question- How do you stop him trying to eat grass?

First Coffee Morning

Today started well with me going to see Uffa at 6.45 before he made any noise, and yet again a dry bed.
Normally Tueday is walk and coffee out, so today we went to the local garden centre and Uffa had a walk through. He enjoyed the smells in the pet shop best. Coffee was had back home as bladder control is still limited!
He then had fun in the garden, after a nap of course, helping empty and clean out the hanging baskets and like Alec (last puppy) he loved the hose.
He is getting bolder by the day and invetigating further and further.
As to training. That is not to say I am not tired as I spent half the night listening for any problems!
He got up at 6.15a.m. and his bed was dry. What a dog!
After filling, emptying (in the proper place), and a bit of playtime he fell fast asleep again. What a life!
After lunch, yes, you've guessed another nap.
Let us hope we get another good night.

First Photo with his big brother

Uffa with Graeme!

Uffa's Arrival

Uffa has arrived and is full of life and very nosy.
